First Look at the new P38 Lighting

The initial development of our new Profile P38 Lighting has begun. We have finished the first rendition of our new lighting and cut the initial prototype for flight testing.  After the initial dry fit of the new model, we have determined that some modifications need to be made to make the assembly of the production version easier and also make the plane a little easier to produce.

The following are pictures of the prototype, dry fit, before any assembly takes place.

P-38 Assembled - Needs Electronics

Sorry for the delay in updating the progress with the P-38 development. We have been focusing our efforts in ramping up production on our line of 3D foamy planes, and with the winter season here in Ohio, there is not much time to fly outdoors, as I am watching the snow fall as I write this.

Below are a few pictures of the P-38, now assembled, painted, and with the motors and props installed.  We have been working on a new mix for our development radio (Futaba 9C) that will allow us to run 2 speed controllers with independent throttles based on either the rudder or aileron. This mix will not be required to fly, but should add some excitement to the flight envelope after the initial maiden flight and any required changes are made.

Hope you like the pictures and stay tuned for updates as we have them!

Maiden Flight - Better than expected!

Again sorry for the delay in updating the progress with the P-38 development. After a great showing at the Model Rama today at the Dayton Convention Center, our technical support and warbird test pilot Mr. Phelps said that the weather was good enough for him to maiden our P-38.  NOTE: Specification change for the control of the outrunners, we decided that we wanted to try running both motors on a single speed controller.  We had some problems with this setup and will be returning to the original plan to run 2 speed controllers on the next flight.

The following is a overview from Chris of his thoughts after the maiden flight was complete. .

Comments from Mr. Phelps: Technical Support / Warbird Test Pilot
"The maiden flight of the P-38 went better than expected. Much to my surprise the plane flew well with very little trim input needed. Control was responsive and solid. The only complaint I had was it felt a little sluggish in the turns, even though it did have a really good roll rate. This prototype had 7 x 4 SF props on it and I think if we changed them to 8 x 4 props to increase power and speed that this should correct the sluggish feeling in the turns. Our only real modification needed is switching to dual speed controls. One speed control seems to have a problem keeping the motors in sync especially near low voltage cutoff.

The Futaba 9CAP was setup with 100% travel on the control surfaces, no expo. I did this so I could have a good feel of what the airplane was doing. I think very little expo will be needed, but then again every pilot is different. Other than some small modifications to the air frame for added strength to the tail booms and the speed control change, I think this plane will be a great flying warbird and very fun to fly. I don't think this plane will be as fast as we thought it would be, but have a good scale performance true to the original P-38 using the LowCostRC components for economy.  Possibly changing to a higher KV rated motor with more current carrying ability would give the boost in speed and performance we would like to see, especially for the speed freaks out there."

Below are a few pictures of the new bird in the air, this thing looks great, if you didn't know it was a model, you would think it was a real P-38 returning home from a mission.
